Netflix is not offering any free services for this pandemic. The news and texts that are currently circulating around the social media platforms and on cell phones are all fake.

During this pandemic you may have received a text that read something like“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will give out three months of Netflix Premium to help you spend time at home” along with a link. These are spreading like wild fire on social media, preying on easy targets desperate for distraction.

The text is usually given with a link which re-directs the victim to a web blink where valuable information is being taken from the victims. Scammers are stealing valuable information like credit card details and personal details. Deemed as a cyber-crime, this procedure is known as Phishing. The victims may lose money, personal identity data and much more in just a few clicks!

There are other scammers trying to promote ways of getting access to free premium Netflix accounts, all of which are fake and are victimizing people through Phishing.

The Business Insider has already published news debunking this false promotion and has declared it as a phishing scheme back in the last week of March 2020. It is important to note that Mathias Dopfner, CEO of Business Inisder’s parent company, Axel Springer, is a Netflix board member. Therefore, it is in their best interest to debunk this fake news and protect their brand.

The Hindustan Times has also reported it as fake news.

Our fact checking makes it evident that Netflix has offered no such promotion. The free account offer is a complete hoax carried out by professional scammers to serve ill intentions.Another Indian News Channel, APB Live, has released a report on the 8th of April, deeming the act as phishing and asking everyone to be aware of it.

Netflix does offer occasional one month free trials at different geographic locations, but there’s certainly no Corona offer! Netflix would never ask for your information via a third party. Please check out their help page on this topic.

Please ignore and report anyone who are sharing such links and promotion to you and inform people around you. You may be deeply endangering yourself if you fall victim to these scams. In the meanwhile, there is a pandemic looming outside!
